How to Install a Window on a House With Vinyl Siding
If your New England home is in need of new windows and is already protected by vinyl siding, special care may be needed to ensure that the installation process is a smooth one. The most important factor in determining whether existing siding will need to be removed for replacement window installation is the age and condition of the window. If the window is still in relatively good condition and the frame, sill, and jambs have not rotted or deteriorated, then you may be able to complete the installation without disturbing the siding. However, if deterioration has occurred or you are attempting to install a larger window, sections of siding will need to be removed.
Removing Sections of Siding Around the Window
If you need to remove sections of siding that are surrounding the window, be sure to use a tool specifically designed for this purpose so the siding won’t be damaged (you should be able to get one at the local home improvement store). The tool will unhook the locked edge of the siding and then you should only have to remove a few nails.
Inspection After Siding Removal
Once the siding has been removed, you will need to inspect the paper and flashing behind it to ensure that it has not suffered any water damage. Look for any holes that need to be patched and make sure that the building paper extends behind the window’s nailing fin. Also, make sure that the flashing along all sides of the window is adequate.
Vinyl Siding Installation Around the New Window
Once the new window has been put in place, make sure that sufficient J-channel molding has been installed so the siding can fit into place around the window. Once the siding has been cut to fit (allow ¼ inch for expansion), it can be slid into the J-channel with the bottom locked into place. Finish by hammering roofing nails back into the existing holes.
