What Gutter Protection Can Do For Your Home

It’s that time of year again….Spring Cleaning!

It’s been a long cold winter and finally, yes finally, Spring is in the air!  All that ugly snow has melted and the tulips and daffodils are erupting.  We’re all so motivated to break out the rakes and ladders to start our serious Spring cleanup.  One of the most popular cleanup jobs is those darn gutters!  It’s amazing what those gutters can collect over the course of a winter season!   Before YOU start ambitiously climbing up your ladder to clean out all that “gutter gunk” think about this…..ladder falls are one of the most common emergency room injuries reported in the country.  Gutter Protection can eliminate that risk while reducing other risks to your home.

In addition to cost and risk,  I never realized the damage that unprotected  debris clogged gutters can create for our homes.  Now that we are coming into the warm summer season one of the my biggest nuisances is mosquitoes!  If your gutters are clogged with wet leaves and debris which creates standing water - guess where those pesky little mosquitoes will hang out – swarms will make their home around that standing water.  Termites are attracted to the moist warm ground which the overflowing gutters will create welcoming those termites with open arms.   Ok enough about insects!   Clogged gutters can create and contribute to all types of damage from rotten soffit and fascia, damaged siding, wet & leaky ceilings, mold and mildew walls, erosion of landscaping, damaged patios, porches and driveways – all costly damages that I never realized can stem just from clogged gutters!

Beside all the risk and damage that we talked about, if you’re like me and not a do-it-yourselfer you’re paying someone else to do it and that can become costly.  So before you drag out your ladder and grab your gloves and bucket to clean out your gutters consider doing some research about gutter protection systems.  By the way, if you want a first hand example of the risk associated with climbing ladders to clean your gutters just come in and talk to our EVP, Dave Normandin.  His “graceful” limp around the office everyday as a result of a ladder fall and shattered heel injury during a beautiful spring afternoon gutter cleaning project reminds us all of those risks!

Good luck and Happy Spring!
